@jdmartinhere is an Australian actor living in Williamsburg NY. ➖ Yeah It’s definitely been a very interesting and eye opening few weeks. So many terrible incidents but also so many really awesome and hopeful ones too. Originally I said I’d like us to just slow down, take stock and come together with our communities and continue to support one another. That’s still very true but bloody hell in light of the last two weeks it feels pretty vanilla... we’ve sort of gone from wanting to see change to demanding it. As we listen, read and educate ourselves about the realities of living as a BIPOC in America and around the world I hope we see a huge overhaul of the systems currently in place. I think we’re starting to see those changes happening within the performing arts communities - or at least the conversation is starting which is, you know, a first step. Being able to educate ourselves on systemic racism which we’ve inadvertently been benefiting from and not having had to experience it our whole lives is a luxury and privilege itself. It’s not just being mean or calling people nasty words, it’s an invisible system that we’re born into to assure dominance of one group over another. I know this is getting long so I’ll just end by saying the importance of community has really been shining bright these last two weeks. Things are happening all over the city, but every night at McCarren park here in Williamsburg we’re gathering for a 30 minute vigil at 7pm (6 feet apart, masks and staying safe). Starting to recognize familiar faces. People are pulling up with cars full of water bottles, snacks, masks and signs. People are and showing up and stepping up. NY Strong!
Say his name. It’s really time for us to listen, learn and recognize our privilege - This is on us. “I was taught to see racism only in individual acts of meanness, not in invisible systems conferring dominance on my group” - Peggy McIntosh. Photo by @ziggy_woooooooooooo
